For twenty years Sylvester Hendershot had delightfully terrified many thousands of children visiting the circus as, with his hair down to his shoulders, wrapped in rags, gnawing a bone, and with occasional roarings, he crouched in his cage amid the other freaks. The Manitowoc County Historical Society has received a Wisconsin Humanities Mini Grant. Died at Pasadena, Cal., Dec. 12, 1897. He was erratic and impractical, and in the latter part of his life he drowned his sorrows in drink. It was in that year that he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and eventually was stationed in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharged he was engaged in farming until becoming one of the best, yet self-taught, mechanics in the area. She was the 5th child of Ray and Sylvia (Rule) Batten.
