I have started using the cigar cutter method of preparation (As shown on the SPC blog) and find that it makes the smoke quite a bit smoother. This is exactly what I look for in a latakia blend. With a total of almost 9 years of age on my batch, the Latakia really tones down into something similar to Syrian Latakia. Upon opening I was greeted with the smell of a thousand campfires. I find the first 1/3 of the bowl a bit harsh and smokey, but then it settles down into a rich creamy smoke that is on par with Penzance in my book.
